Born 11th of March 1980 in Trondheim, Norway. Lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. Graduated from Bergen Academy of the Arts in 2006 and The National Film School of Denmark in 2011.
His first feature film, the Danish/German thriller I AM HERE, was released in 2014. It was directed by Anders Morgenthaler and starred Kim Basinger. Here he met Sebastian Schipper who starred in the movie, and shortly after Sturla went on to shoot VICTORIA, together with Schipper. The film premiered in main competition at the 65th Berlinale, and won a Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement for its cinematography.
Then came the Icelandic RAMS, directed by Grímur Hákornasson, which premiered in Cannes 2015 and won the Un Certain Regard Grand Prix. It also won the Silver Frog at Camerimage 2015.
The horror film SHELLEY directed by Ali Abassi, premiered in the Panorama section at the 66th Berlinale and was followed by HEARTSTONE, directed by Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson, which premiered at Venice Film Festival 2016 where it won the Queer Lion.
Charlie McDowell's sci-fi drama THE DISCOVERY premiered at Sundance in January 2017. Sturla just finished shooting Benh Zeitlins long-awaited follow up to BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. He also lensed Michael Noer's upcoming feature film BEFORE THE FROST which premiered at Toronto 2018, and late composer/director Jóhann Jóhannsson's LAST AND FIRST MEN which hopefully will have its release early 2019.
Sturla just wrapped shooting Josephine Decker's SHIRLEY starring Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Logan Lerman and Michael Stuhlbarg.
